Kratom Addiction Treatment in Arizona

Kratom is often promoted as a natural remedy for pain, anxiety, or opioid withdrawal. While it is sometimes perceived as a safer alternative to other substances, kratom can carry serious risks. For many people, regular use leads to physical dependence, psychological reliance, and withdrawal symptoms that are difficult to manage without support.

At Monument Recovery, we provide evidence-based kratom addiction treatment in Arizona for individuals experiencing dependence, withdrawal, or loss of control related to kratom use. Our approach addresses both the biological effects of kratom and the underlying mental health or life stressors that contribute to continued use.

Understanding Kratom & Addiction

What is Kratom?

Kratom comes from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree, native to Southeast Asia. It contains naturally occurring alkaloids that interact with opioid receptors in the brain. The two most clinically significant compounds are:

  • Mitragynine
  • 7-hydroxymitragynine, commonly referred to as 7-OH

These compounds are responsible for kratom’s stimulant and opioid-like effects. Depending on dose, strain, and formulation, kratom can produce increased energy, pain relief, sedation, or euphoria.

Although kratom is sold legally in many places, it is not regulated for potency or purity. Products can vary widely, which increases the risk of dependence and complications.

The Difference Between Kratom & 7-OH

Understanding the difference between traditional kratom and 7-hydroxymitragynine is critical when discussing kratom addiction risk.

Traditional Kratom

Most raw kratom leaf products contain higher levels of mitragynine and relatively small amounts of 7-OH. Mitragynine acts as a partial opioid receptor agonist, meaning it activates opioid receptors but generally produces milder effects than prescription opioids.

In lower doses, mitragynine may feel stimulating. In higher doses, it can feel sedating and opioid-like. Repeated exposure can still lead to tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal.

7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH)

7-OH is far more potent than mitragynine at opioid receptors. Even though it appears in smaller quantities, it has a disproportionately strong effect on the brain. Research shows that 7-OH binds more tightly to opioid receptors and produces effects closer to traditional opioids.

Some modern kratom products are processed or concentrated in ways that significantly increase 7-OH levels. These products can carry a much higher risk of addiction, withdrawal severity, and overdose-like symptoms.

In many cases, individuals do not realize they are consuming kratom with elevated 7-OH content, which helps explain why some people develop dependence rapidly or experience unexpectedly intense withdrawal.

Knowing How Kratom Addiction Works

What Kratom Addiction Looks Like

Is Kratom addictive?

Yes. Kratom can be addictive, particularly with frequent use or exposure to high-potency products containing increased levels of 7-OH. Over time, the brain adapts to the presence of kratom, leading to tolerance and physical dependence.

People may begin using kratom to manage pain, anxiety, or opioid withdrawal, then find themselves needing it simply to feel normal. This pattern can affect individuals of all ages and backgrounds, including those with no prior history of opioid misuse.

Signs of Kratom Dependence & Withdrawal

Kratom addiction can be subtle at first. Common signs include:

  • Needing kratom to function physically or emotionally
  • Increasing dose or frequency over time
  • Withdrawal symptoms when attempting to stop
  • Cravings or anxiety when kratom is unavailable
  • Sleep disruption, mood changes, or irritability
  • Continued use despite negative consequences

Because kratom withdrawal can resemble opioid withdrawal, many people continue using to avoid discomfort rather than because they want to keep using.
