Kratom is derived from the leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa tree, a plant native to Southeast Asia. While it has traditional medicinal uses, kratom has gained popularity in the U.S. as a recreational drug and a self-medication option for pain and opioid withdrawal.
Kratom interacts with the brain’s opioid receptors, producing effects that vary by dose. Low doses can act as a stimulant, while high doses produce sedative, opioid-like effects. Regular use of kratom can lead to dependency and withdrawal symptoms, making it difficult for users to quit on their own. Kratom addiction treatment in Arizona provides the support and tools needed to break free from this cycle.
Understanding the difference between traditional kratom and 7-hydroxymitragynine is critical when discussing kratom addiction risk.
Traditional Kratom
Most raw kratom leaf products contain higher levels of mitragynine and relatively small amounts of 7-OH. Mitragynine acts as a partial opioid receptor agonist, meaning it activates opioid receptors but generally produces milder effects than prescription opioids.
In lower doses, mitragynine may feel stimulating. In higher doses, it can feel sedating and opioid-like. Repeated exposure can still lead to tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal.
7-Hydroxymitragynine (7-OH)
7-OH is far more potent than mitragynine at opioid receptors. Even though it appears in smaller quantities, it has a disproportionately strong effect on the brain. Research shows that 7-OH binds more tightly to opioid receptors and produces effects closer to traditional opioids.
Some modern kratom products are processed or concentrated in ways that significantly increase 7-OH levels. These products can carry a much higher risk of addiction, withdrawal severity, and overdose-like symptoms.
In many cases, individuals do not realize they are consuming kratom with elevated 7-OH content, which helps explain why some people develop dependence rapidly or experience unexpectedly intense withdrawal.
Monument Recovery is proud to accept most major commercial insurance plans to help cover up to 100% of the costs associated with treatment at our programs. To find our your personal options, get a free verification of benefits.

Kratom can be addictive, particularly with frequent use or exposure to high-potency products containing increased levels of 7-OH. Over time, the brain adapts to the presence of kratom, leading to tolerance and physical dependence.
People may begin using kratom to manage pain, anxiety, or opioid withdrawal, then find themselves needing it simply to feel normal. This pattern can affect individuals of all ages and backgrounds, including those with no prior history of opioid misuse. When addiction forms, professional kratom addiction treatment in Arizona is recommended.
Kratom addiction can be subtle at first. Common signs include:

If you’re hurting and don’t know where to turn, Monument is the place where healing finally starts to feel possible. I can honestly say Monument is one of the most equipped, compassionate, and genuine programs I’ve ever been part of. It isn’t just a facility… it’s a family who truly cares about helping individuals change their lives and regain freedom. Leadership shows up every day with integrity, empathy, and a sincere commitment to be of service. Every department works together to support each client’s healing. Admissions meets clients and families with compassion and zero judgment. The clinical team helps clients process trauma, learn powerful coping skills, and rebuild confidence and purpose. The operations team provides safety, stability, and consistent day-to-day support. Together, they create an environment where real healing can happen. During my time at Monument, I watched countless individuals transform their lives and rebuild relationships they thought were lost forever. Clients aren’t just a number… they are seen, heard, valued, and supported. Staff is educated and informed about substance use, mental health, and co-occurring disorders, and they know how to guide clients through real, lasting change. One thing that always stood out to me was how many clients were so positively impacted that they chose to return as staff. That alone says a lot. Monument doesn’t just help people heal… it helps them grow into leaders, mentors, and individuals who believe in their future again. With nothing but love, thank you to the team at Monument for everything. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity I had to learn, grow, and be part of something so meaningful.

Kratom is a plant-derived substance that can produce stimulant or opioid-like effects depending on the dose. While some people use it for pain or mood, regular use can lead to dependence and addiction, especially with prolonged or high-dose use.
Signs may include increased tolerance, cravings, difficulty stopping use, withdrawal symptoms (such as irritability, anxiety, nausea, or insomnia), and continued use despite negative effects on health or daily life.
Some individuals may benefit from a supervised detox or stabilization period, especially if they are experiencing withdrawal symptoms. Our team at Monument Recovery can assess your situation and recommend the safest and most appropriate starting point.
We offer a full continuum of care in Mesa, Arizona, including residential inpatient treatment, Partial Hospitalization (PHP), Intensive Outpatient (IOP), and outpatient programs. Each treatment plan is personalized to address both substance use and any underlying mental health concerns.
