Hoarding disorder is characterized by persistent difficulty discarding or parting with possessions, regardless of their actual value. Individuals with this condition experience intense emotional distress when attempting to remove items, often leading to excessive accumulation of belongings. Over time, this clutter can impair the use of living spaces and negatively impact quality of life.
According to the American Psychiatric Association (APA), hoarding disorder affects approximately 2-6% of the population. It is distinct from typical behaviors like collecting or keeping mementos—it often stems from underlying psychological challenges that require therapeutic intervention.
Monument Recovery is proud to accept most major commercial insurance plans to help cover up to 100% of the costs associated with treatment at our programs. To find our your personal options, get a free verification of benefits.

Many people enjoy collecting items, whether it’s stamps, antiques, or books. But there’s a key difference between collecting and hoarding:
The emotional attachment in hoarding can feel overwhelming, making it difficult for individuals to let go of items, even those with no practical or sentimental value.

Hoarding disorder doesn’t happen out of nowhere. It typically emerges from the interaction of several psychological, neurological, and environmental factors. The development of hoarding disorder may be associated with the following issues:
In some cases, hoarding behaviors may be the result of a major life change such as the death of a loved one or the result of another traumatic event. Clinging to items can offer some people comfort and a sense of safety during emotional distress.
Conditions such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or even obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can co-occur with hoarding disorder. This is known as a dual diagnosis. These conditions make the strong emotions involved in decluttering and decision-making more pronounced.
Difficulties with executive functioning — the processes of organization, prioritization, and concentration — are linked to hoarding disorder. The disorder makes it harder for people to process decisions about what to keep or throw away, even when their living spaces become unmanageable as a result.
Environmental factors can also play a part in the development of hoarding disorder. If people grow up with family members who hoard or in a very cluttered childhood home, they may be more likely to adopt the same behavior as adults.

From day one, the staff and therapists treated me with compassion, respect, and genuine care. What sets Monument apart is that they don’t use a one-size-fits-all approach. They take the time to get to know each person as an individual and create a treatment plan that fits their specific needs. Their therapists are incredibly knowledgeable, experienced, and passionate about what they do. They helped me understand myself, work through difficult challenges, and build a foundation for lasting recovery. The entire team genuinely cares about their patients and goes above and beyond to support them every step of the way. I never felt like just another client—I felt seen, heard, and valued. I can honestly say that if it wasn’t for Monument Recovery, I wouldn’t be here today. I am forever grateful for the hope, healing, and second chance they gave me. If you’re hurting and don’t know where to turn, Monument is the place where healing finally starts to feel possible. I can honestly say Monument is one of the most equipped, compassionate, and genuine programs I’ve ever been part of. It isn’t just a facility… it’s a family who truly cares about helping individuals change their lives and regain freedom. Leadership shows up every day with integrity, empathy, and a sincere commitment to be of service. Every department works together to support each client’s healing. Admissions meets clients and families with compassion and zero judgment. The clinical team helps clients process trauma, learn powerful coping skills, and rebuild confidence and purpose. The operations team provides safety, stability, and consistent day-to-day support. Together, they create an environment where real healing can happen. During my time at Monument, I watched countless individuals transform their lives and rebuild relationships they thought were lost forever. Clients aren’t just a number… they are seen, heard, valued, and supported. Staff is educated and informed about substance use, mental health, and co-occurring disorders, and they know how to guide clients through real, lasting change. One thing that always stood out to me was how many clients were so positively impacted that they chose to return as staff. That alone says a lot. Monument doesn’t just help people heal… it helps them grow into leaders, mentors, and individuals who believe in their future again. With nothing but love, thank you to the team at Monument for everything. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity I had to learn, grow, and be part of something so meaningful.

Recognizing when hoarding disorder requires professional intervention can be difficult, but several signs indicate the need for treatment:
Impact On Daily Life
When hoarding behaviors prevent basic activities such as cooking, cleaning, or moving freely within a home, treatment may be necessary. Cluttered environments often pose safety hazards, such as blocked exits or fire risks, which further highlight the need for help.
Strained Relationships
Loved ones may find it challenging to navigate the emotional and practical impacts of hoarding, which can lead to frustration or a loss of connection. If hoarding behaviors are negatively affecting personal relationships, professional guidance may help repair these dynamics.
Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions
Hoarding disorder is often associated with other mental illnesses known as a dual diagnosis. Anxiety is very common, with many sufferers worried about throwing things away or making a “wrong decision”. Depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can also contribute to hoarding behaviors, especially in the aftermath of periods of loss or trauma.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) also appears to be strongly linked to hoarding disorder, as OCD is characterized by unwanted thoughts and ritualistic behavior. OCD therapies, such as CBT, have been shown to be highly effective when adapted for hoarding.
Whether you get diagnosed with hoarding disorder at Monument Recovery or come to us diagnosed, the process should always involve standard diagnostic tools. Diagnosis of hoarding disorder involves careful evaluation by a licensed mental health professional. The criteria, outlined in the DSM-5 (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), include:
Recovering from hoarding disorder requires evidence-based care that combines therapy, skill-building, and ongoing support.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is the most commonly recommended treatment for hoarding disorder. During sessions, individuals learn techniques to challenge their thoughts about possessions, develop better decision-making strategies, and gradually reduce clutter in a manageable, step-by-step process.
Exposure Therapy
By gradually exposing individuals to the process of letting go of items, exposure therapy helps reduce the distress associated with decluttering. Over time, this builds confidence and strengthens emotional resilience.
Medication Management
While there is no specific medication that can treat hoarding disorder directly, those with hoarding disorder often experience mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, and OCD. When we are able to treat these mental health conditions, it can ease triggers for hoarding and make slow exposure and treatment progression more managable.
Family Support
Family involvement plays a crucial role in hoarding disorder treatment. Psychoeducation helps loved ones understand the condition, recognize the emotional struggles behind hoarding, and adopt healthy strategies to support recovery without enabling harmful behaviors.
