Trauma refers to a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that overwhelms your ability to cope. Trauma can stem from events such as abuse, neglect, accidents, natural disasters, violence, or loss. While everyone reacts to trauma differently, it can significantly impact emotional, mental, and physical health, creating long-lasting barriers to living a fulfilling life.
There are two primary types of trauma people may experience:
Trauma impacts not only your memory and emotions but can also lead to symptoms such as anxiety, fear, hypervigilance, and even physical reactions.
Trauma often leaves survivors feeling:
Trauma can also manifest physically, causing symptoms such as:

Trauma symptoms can affect nearly every area of your life. They can show up in how you interact with people, how you feel about yourself, and even in your ability to carry out day-to-day tasks.
Relationship Problems
Trauma can take a toll on personal and work relationships. You may feel isolated and find it difficult to trust people. Or you may feel emotionally numb in your closest relationships. It may also be difficult for you to clearly communicate your needs to others.
Avoidance
To avoid feeling pain, you may avoid people, places, or activities that can trigger painful memories of your trauma. At first, you may do this intentionally, but over time, this avoidance behavior can take an increasing toll on your day-to-day functioning.
Unhealthy Coping Skills
Unhealthy coping skills are common among trauma survivors who do not receive treatment. Self-medicating with drugs or alcohol or isolating yourself from others are all common but unhealthy ways of dealing with trauma.
Work or School Issues
Trauma can make it difficult to concentrate, be productive, or find motivation at work or school. This can lead to problems at work or school and cause you to feel frustrated and incompetent.

Trauma can take many different forms, and we customize our treatment to the needs of the unique traumas you have experienced at Monument Recovery.
PTSD is an anxiety disorder that may develop after exposure to a traumatic event or shock. Symptoms can include flashbacks, nightmares, and persistent anxiety or fear.
Childhood traumas or adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can leave a long-lasting impact into adulthood. Childhood traumas can negatively influence a person’s self-esteem, mental health, and relationships.
Complex trauma occurs when a person has been exposed to multiple traumatic events, often in negative and abusive interpersonal settings. People with complex trauma often have experienced repeated abuse or neglect.
Acute trauma is when the trauma response is to a single incident such as a car accident, physical assault, or sudden loss of a loved one. This is usually easier to heal from, but if acute trauma isn’t addressed, it can lead to long-term emotional effects.
At Monument Recovery, we provide trauma-informed care. We understand that your trauma has a unique impact on your life, and our programs, environment, and practices are designed to promote safety and trust while addressing the effects of trauma on your mind and body. We know that the effects of trauma require a variety of personalized strategies for healing.
Individualized Treatment
The effects of trauma are deeply personal and unique to the individual who experienced them. Your treatment team will work with you to build an individualized treatment plan that takes into account your trauma history, current symptoms, and goals.
Safety and Trust
Safety and trust are the foundations of trauma recovery and the key to successfully managing the range of intense feelings that accompany trauma. Compassion, safety, and stability are the cornerstones of our trauma treatment program.
Evidence-Based Therapies
Therapeutic approaches like EMDR, CBT, and mindfulness practices are all evidence-based and help clients overcome the lasting effects of trauma on both their emotional and physical well-being.
At Monument Recovery, we recognize that no two people are the same, which is why we offer multiple levels of care. We have a range of treatment options to meet the unique needs of your situation, lifestyle, and recovery goals, from intensive, immersive care to more flexible programming.
Our Inpatient Program provides the highest level of care in a safe, structured, and supportive setting for those experiencing the most acute symptoms or for individuals who need 24/7 care and support. At this level of care, you will receive intensive therapy, skills training, and 24-hour support in a safe environment free from external stressors or distractions. This level of care provides individuals with the structure and focus they need to start their recovery.
The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is for those who need or want more care than they can get at home. PHP is a good step up from Outpatient and a step down from Inpatient. It's for those who need treatment every day, but want to go home at night. PHP centers usually have a set schedule of therapies, groups, and other activities to help with personal development and stabilization.
Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a part-time level of care for individuals who are working to recover from mental health and/or addiction issues while also maintaining daily responsibilities such as work, school, and family. IOP offers a more independent environment than our higher levels of care, while also providing more frequent therapy and group support to consistently work on overcoming challenges and managing symptoms.
The Outpatient Program is a continued care option for individuals who have completed higher levels of treatment or who need less-intensive treatment. This program allows individuals to maintain their progress, prevent relapse, and provides individuals with tools to cope and encouragement to flourish and succeed in their day-to-day lives. With outpatient therapy, you have access to continued care that fits your schedule.
We understand that each person’s recovery journey is unique, and that is why we offer multiple treatment levels and options at Monument Recovery.
Therapy is a cornerstone of trauma treatment, guiding you toward emotional healing, self-awareness, and resilience.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT helps you reframe negative thoughts and beliefs associated with trauma. It equips you with tools to recognize harmful patterns and replace them with healthy coping strategies.
EMDR Therapy
EMDR is specifically designed to help individuals process traumatic memories in a safe, structured environment. It uses guided eye movements to reduce the emotional intensity of these memories and promote healing.
Somatic Experiencing
Trauma affects the body as well as the mind. Somatic experiencing focuses on releasing built-up tension and stress stored in the body, helping you feel more grounded.
Mindfulness and Stress Reduction
Mindfulness practices promote relaxation and present-moment awareness, reducing stress and improving emotional regulation during recovery.
