Social anxiety disorder, or social phobia, is a condition characterized by intense fear or discomfort in social situations. Unlike occasional nervousness that most people experience, social anxiety involves persistent worry, avoidance behaviors, and difficulty engaging in interactions, significantly affecting your quality of life.
Social anxiety stems from a deeply rooted fear of being judged, embarrassed, or rejected, and the distress it causes often feels disproportionate to the situation at hand. Unlike fleeting moments of shyness, social anxiety persists over time and may require professional treatment to address effectively.
At the core of social anxiety is a fear of being negatively evaluated by others. This fear may arise in situations where you’re speaking, eating, or performing tasks in front of others, prompting thoughts such as, “What if I embarrass myself?” or “What if people think I’m awkward or incompetent?” The worry of making mistakes or being harshly judged by peers amplifies anxiety, creating a cycle of avoidance and distress.
When faced with social situations, many individuals with social anxiety experience physical symptoms that feel beyond their control. These can include:
As social anxiety develops and continues, there is a tendency to avoid those situations that make you uncomfortable or fearful. As a result, you may start turning down invitations, not going to public places, and even sometimes avoiding unavoidable events, like work meetings or family events. While this type of behavior may seem like the best way to feel better in the moment, it often leads to a sense of isolation and can prevent progress or growth.
Monument Recovery is proud to accept most major commercial insurance plans to help cover up to 100% of the costs associated with treatment at our programs. To find our your personal options, get a free verification of benefits.

Keep in mind that social anxiety can happen outside of special occasions and formal events. It can affect any and all areas of your life, turning otherwise normal situations into distressing or anxiety-provoking experiences.
Giving a presentation, attending meetings, or even asking a question in a classroom may seem impossible. As a result, social anxiety may prevent you from taking opportunities, getting a promotion, or completing your studies.
Forming and maintaining relationships may be challenging when you have social anxiety. In severe cases, it can lead to missed romantic connections or not having any friends at all. If the fear of rejection or saying the “wrong thing” is strong, you may withdraw and avoid dating, social outings, and social circles.
It’s common for social anxiety to lead to excessive worrying both before and after an event. It can involve hours of dread before a social interaction, second-guessing your responses long after an event, or becoming stuck on how you were perceived. This constant cycle of anticipatory anxiety and post-event rumination can compound and exacerbate your symptoms.
You may develop the tendency to make excuses to cancel plans, isolate yourself from others, or avoid social situations entirely. While it can be relieving to avoid triggers, retreating from socializing and challenges will lead to a loss of coping skills and make you feel more lonely in the long term.

Social anxiety affects individuals in different ways, depending on the situations they find most distressing.
Generalized social anxiety entails anxiety across nearly all social situations. This includes interacting in both casual and formal settings, such as gatherings, public places, and everyday conversations.
Performance anxiety focuses on distress during high-pressure scenarios like presentations, public speaking, or performing in front of an audience. The fear of making mistakes or being scrutinized often takes over.
Interaction-based anxiety applies to nervousness while engaging directly with others, such as meeting new people, introducing yourself, or maintaining conversations. This form of anxiety may prevent authentic connections and foster feelings of isolation.

Monument Recovery truly saved my life. When I came in, I was struggling and didn’t know if recovery was possible for me. From day one, the staff and therapists treated me with compassion, respect, and genuine care. What sets Monument apart is that they don’t use a one-size-fits-all approach. They take the time to get to know each person as an individual and create a treatment plan that fits their specific needs. Their therapists are incredibly knowledgeable, experienced, and passionate about what they do. They helped me understand myself, work through difficult challenges, and build a foundation for lasting recovery. The entire team genuinely cares about their patients and goes above and beyond to support them every step of the way. I never felt like just another client—I felt seen, heard, and valued. I can honestly say that if it wasn’t for Monument Recovery, I wouldn’t be here today. I am forever grateful for the hope, healing, and second chance they gave me. If you’re hurting and don’t know where to turn, Monument is the place where healing finally starts to feel possible. I can honestly say Monument is one of the most equipped, compassionate, and genuine programs I’ve ever been part of. It isn’t just a facility… it’s a family who truly cares about helping individuals change their lives and regain freedom. Leadership shows up every day with integrity, empathy, and a sincere commitment to be of service. Every department works together to support each client’s healing. Admissions meets clients and families with compassion and zero judgment. The clinical team helps clients process trauma, learn powerful coping skills, and rebuild confidence and purpose. The operations team provides safety, stability, and consistent day-to-day support. Together, they create an environment where real healing can happen. During my time at Monument, I watched countless individuals transform their lives and rebuild relationships they thought were lost forever. Clients aren’t just a number… they are seen, heard, valued, and supported. Staff is educated and informed about substance use, mental health, and co-occurring disorders, and they know how to guide clients through real, lasting change. One thing that always stood out to me was how many clients were so positively impacted that they chose to return as staff. That alone says a lot. Monument doesn’t just help people heal… it helps them grow into leaders, mentors, and individuals who believe in their future again. With nothing but love, thank you to the team at Monument for everything. I’m truly grateful for the opportunity I had to learn, grow, and be part of something so meaningful.

Therapy is at the heart of successful social anxiety treatment, offering tools and strategies to address fears and build resilience.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is one of the most effective tools for treating social anxiety. It helps you identify and reframe negative thought patterns, allowing you to shift away from anxious thinking and toward healthier perspectives.
Exposure Therapy
Gradual exposure to social situations—starting small and progressing over time—can reduce avoidance behaviors, lessen sensitivity to anxiety triggers, and foster personal growth.
Social Skills Development
Improving communication and interpersonal skills is often part of recovery. Our program focuses on building confidence to navigate social situations with less fear or hesitation.
Mindfulness and Stress Management
Mindfulness techniques, such as grounding exercises and deep breathing, help regulate emotions and reduce physical symptoms during moments of heightened anxiety.
